Do you have hair envy? Stop dishing out big bucks for those expensive fad hair treatments that don’t really do anything to your strands. Get some daily habits that won’t drain your wallet and actually make your hair healthier.
We went to some of the top stylists and asked them to spill the juice on what habits ruin our hair and which ones make it look fantastic and that you can do from the comfort of your own home.
5 things to avoid if you want fantastic hair
Avoid heat styling
We know that you can’t avoid heat styling completely. Excess heat can cause frizzy hair and split ends. If you must use your blow dryers, flat iron, curling iron or hot rollers then make sure you apply a heat protectant spray-in that will help to reduce frizz, dried spilt ends and protect your hair color.
Don’t skimp on moisturizing conditioner
Your hair and scalp need to be moisturized just like your skin does. If your scalp is dry, it grows unhealthy hair and can cause dander. Every time you wash your hair you should condition your hair. Make sure you choose a condition that is designed for your hair type: normal, dry and brittle, color-treated or oily.
Stop switching up your hair care brands
We really don’t know where this common misconception started that by switching up your hair care brands you will have healthier hair because it will never have time to adapt to the new product. Experts recommend finding a product that works for you and sticking to it. It is fine switching it while you look for a new product for your newly chemical treated hair, etc., but once you find it, don’t let it go.
Avoid using too much of a good thing
One of the biggest mistakes we make is while shampooing and conditioning our hair. If you tend to apply all over, then you are doing it wrong. Shampoo should be applied to your scalp and first few inches of hair, where oil tends to build up and conditioner to your roots, that tend to dry out faster.
Stop it with those hot showers
Hot water might feel good on your sore muscles but it is basically blasting your hair with excess heat that leaves you with limp, dull, lifeless hair – in other words knocking the volume out of your hair. Instead, have semi-warm showers and rinse out your conditioner with a cold stream of water, locking in the nutrients on each strand of hair.
5 things to do if you want fantastic hair
Listen to your hair
Learn to listen to your hair by washing it when it needs it. If you are using a good quality shampoo then it won’t damage your hair by stripping it of its natural oils. Frequent washing can reduce split ends, give your a hair a clean, shiny look.
Sleep on silk pillowcases
Cotton pillowcases can rough up your hair cuticle while you sleep, but silk will leave it smooth and soft. If you are tired of waking up to a head full of frizzy strands, then treat yourself like a princess and use silky, satin pillowcases.
Regularly trim your hair
Trimming your hair regularly, even while growing it out prevents spilt ends from forming. Once your hair forms cuticle splits, there is really no way of repairing the damage. The only way to prevent this from occurring is by getting your hair trimmed every 6 to 8 weeks.
Follow a healthy diet
A healthy diet produces healthy hair. If you aren’t eating wholesome foods, you will have dry, brittle hair. What you eat plays a direct role in how fast your hair will grow, the volume and the gloss.
Wash your hair accordingly
If you live in the city and are exposed to pollutants daily, live in a humid area or work out daily, then you will need to wash your hair daily. But if you live in the country, then you might be able to get away with washing your hair every three days. Try washing your hair once every 1 and half days if you have oily or combination type of hair.
